    The Effect of Income, Ethnicity/Race and Institutional Factors on Mortgage Borrower Behavior

    Studies examining mortgage choice behavior generally assume a frictionless mortgage market in which borrower decisions are influenced only by economic variables. This study explores the interface between demographic and institutional factors inherent in mortgage market logistics and the information flow that affects borrower behavior. The efficiency of these processes is particularly important when studying inner city real estate markets, since these markets are disproportionately represented by low income and minority households. The effect of institutional factors was examined by conducting a survey of borrower behavior in metropolitan Washington, DC. The secondary data findings indicate that ethnicity /race and income are jointly sensitive to borrower decision, confirming the clientele effect. The primary data findings also indicate that institutional factors influence mortgage choice. Similarly, borrowers are influenced by the channel chosen to evaluate market information. However, income was not found to be a significant determinant of borrower behavior.

In the present article the arguments supporting this view are reviewed and challenged by developing the substantive framework of double entry accounting in equation form and linking it to the evolution of mathematics in the Arab-Hindu cultures. The article concludes with specific suggestions for obtaining empirical evidence which might support the substantive hypothesis as the causal factor of double entry accounting

    Temporal-adaptive Euler/Navier-Stokes algorithm for unsteady aerodynamic analysis of airfoils using unstructured dynamic meshes

    A temporal adaptive algorithm for the time-integration of the two-dimensional Euler or Navier-Stokes equations is presented. The flow solver involves an upwind flux-split spatial discretization for the convective terms and central differencing for the shear-stress and heat flux terms on an unstructured mesh of triangles. The temporal adaptive algorithm is a time-accurate integration procedure which allows flows with high spatial and temporal gradients to be computed efficiently by advancing each grid cell near its maximum allowable time step. Results indicate that an appreciable computational savings can be achieved for both inviscid and viscous unsteady airfoil problems using unstructured meshes without degrading spatial or temporal accuracy

    Cloud atlas for the FIRE Cirrus Intensive Field Observation (IFO)

    An Intensive Field Observation (IFO) of cirrus clouds was conducted over the mid-western U.S. during the period October 13 to November 2, 1986. This activity, part of the First ISCCP Regional Experiment (FIRE), included measurements made from specially deployed instruments on the ground, balloons, and aircraft as well as observations from existing operational and experimental satellites. One of the sets of satellite observations was the radiance measurements made with the 5-channel AVHRR radiometer on the NOAA 9 polar orbiting meteorological satellite. The ground resolution of the measurements at nadir is approx. 1 km. It is these measurements, made once each day at approximately 2:30 p.m. local time, that were used in determining the present cloud atlas. The area covered by the atlas is slightly larger than the area specified for the IFO, in order to be in alignment with the grid that will be used in a forthcoming atlas for the larger, ETO region. The atlas contains four pages of information for each satellite pass. The 1st page of each group shows the distribution of measured radiances in channel 1 (normalized to the incoming solar flux multiplied by the cosine of the solar zenith angle) and in channel 4 for the area as a whole and for each analysis box. The 2nd page shows the images in: channels 1 and 2, channel 3R; and channel 4. The 3rd page shows the retrieved parameters in graphical form for the region as a whole and for each analysis box, where cloud fraction appears as a contour plot with respect to optical thickness and cloudtop temperature. The 4th page provides a statistical summary of the retrieved parameters in numerical form for each analysis box

    Remote capacitive sensing in two-dimension quantum-dot arrays

    We investigate gate-defined quantum dots in silicon on insulator nanowire field-effect transistors fabricated using a foundry-compatible fully-depleted silicon-on-insulator (FD-SOI) process. A series of split gates wrapped over the silicon nanowire naturally produces a 2×n2\times n bilinear array of quantum dots along a single nanowire. We begin by studying the capacitive coupling of quantum dots within such a 2×\times2 array, and then show how such couplings can be extended across two parallel silicon nanowires coupled together by shared, electrically isolated, 'floating' electrodes. With one quantum dot operating as a single-electron-box sensor, the floating gate serves to enhance the charge sensitivity range, enabling it to detect charge state transitions in a separate silicon nanowire. By comparing measurements from multiple devices we illustrate the impact of the floating gate by quantifying both the charge sensitivity decay as a function of dot-sensor separation and configuration within the dual-nanowire structure.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, 35 cites and supplementar
